The Chandler Blvd Tiny Home Village
Tiny transitional housing in North Los Angeles
Overview
Officially opened in February 2021, the first village of its kind in Los Angeles, Chandler Blvd has 40 homes (75 beds) manufactured by Pallet Shelter. The Chandler Blvd. Tiny Home Village was developed by the City of Los Angeles. Each tiny home is 64 square feet in size, has two beds, heat, air-conditioning, windows, a small desk and a front door.
Context:
- LAHSA’s 2022 count revealed 41,980 unhoused people in the city of Los Angeles, up 1.7% from 2020. In the county, there were 69,144 unhoused people, an increase of 4.1% (source).
- With help from the federal government and the State of California through innovative non-congregate shelter programs like Project Roomkey and Project Homekey, LA County saw a 12% increase in its sheltered population (20,596 people) over 2020, while LA City’s sheltered population grew by 8.7% (13,522 people). The City of LA also saw a 1.4% drop in the number of people experiencing unsheltered homelessness (source).
Mission: Provide transitional housing for individuals experiencing homelessness as they are placed into permanent housing nearby or elsewhere.
Site
Owner: City of Los Angeles.
Previous Use: Vacant land.
Use Arrangement: License to operator, Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission.
Site Selection Criteria Considerations: The Chandler Boulevard Bridge Home was constructed on an awkwardly shaped, leftover infill site that could have been easily looked over if it weren’t for hawkeyed City officials looking to find land to create bridge homes.
