Better Shelter is a social shelter provider that was the result of a collaborative research & development project undertaken by the founder of Better Shelter and UNHCR, with the support of the IKEA Foundation, aimed towards developing an improved shelter solution that provides greater dignity and supports the protection of refugees and other people of concern. Better Shelter offers one product - the RHU 1.2 (short for "Refugee Housing Unit version 1.2"), which started as a prototype showcased to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) in 2012 to now over 60,000 units deployed to more than 66 countries. Beyond housing, Better Shelters have been used for classrooms and offices in communities around the world. Better Shelters is headquartered in a suburb of Stockholm, Sweden (Hägersten) and its shelters are manufactured in Gdansk, Poland.
