YIMBY is an acronym for “yes, in my back yard”, a pro-development, pre-housing movement. YIMBY is in contrast to the anti-growth NIMBY (“not in my backyard”) mentality.

YIMBY is a growing movement of people who support higher density cities, rather than exacerbating urban sprawl.  And as rents rise in places already lacking affordable housing options, people from increasingly diverse backgrounds have begun to describe themselves as “YIMBYs” – from students demanding more affordable housing options near campus, to families looking for housing near jobs, to seniors and empty-nesters looking for alternative housing options that allow them to stay in their neighborhood when downsizing to a more efficient and affordable home.
