Straw Homes

Straw Homes

While a house made from straw didn’t end well for one of the Three Little Pigs in the famous children’s fable, in real life, hay is a sustainable, eco-friendly and insulating material that’s perfect for housing applications (source link).

Stackable blocks are made from compressing and binding large amounts of straw, an abundant and relatively inexpensive material in many regions of the world. Straw bales can be used as insulation or as the structural building block of the home. The walls are finished with plaster. Straw bale houses are well insulated and have the ability to retain the heat during winter while remaining cool in the summer. An additional benefit of straw is cleaner household air, as straw is non-toxic, chemical-free material, which reduces indoor pollution. Learn more about straw homes here.
