Railway City: A New Vision for Africa in Nairobi, Kenya

Charles M. Hinga
Principal Secretary, Kenya's State Department Housing and Urban Development

Railway City, envisioned in Nairobi’s latest Integrated Urban Development Plan, is an iconic multi-modal, transit-oriented, urban development project in the heart of Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, setting a new standard for the path forward in sustainable, equitable urban development. At the center of Railway City is a new railway station (connecting to a new network of city-wide bus-rapid transit) to provide new connections across the region and throughout the city. Built up around the station will be a new mixed income, mixed use 20-block urban district of a new offices, retail, and residential flats, in addition to a world-class cultural center and museum.

Mr. Charles M. Hinga, Principal Secretary of Kenya’s State Department of Housing and Urban Development illustrates the vision and the impact of this innovative urban development initiative now underway.
