House A (Mehr Als Wohnen)
Cooperative living in the innovative master-planned development, Mehr Als Wohnen, in Zurich, Switzerland
Mehr Als Wohnen (translating to “More than Living”) is a 13-building village of 370 apartments, shops, restaurants, workshops and artist’s studios, day care centres, and a guesthouses in a northern suburb of Zurich. With an overarching goal of creating a distinct but cohesive part of the city, the masterplan was created collectively by several architecture firms (selected via an urban planning competition), including Duplex, Futurafrosch, Müller Sigrist, pool, and Miroslav Šik.
Duplex Architekten was responsible for the master plan of the 13-building site, in addition to the design of two buildings on the site: the Cluster House («House A») and the Housing Community («House M»). The key design concepts include high density residents that balance smaller, private apartment satellites, coupled to larger common areas, shared kitchens, and joint living rooms. There are three levels of community – at the personal level in the bedroom and bathroom unit, at the 8-unit cluster level with the shared living spaces, and at the building level within the larger 13-building site.
